Having issues applying vinyl to wood projects?

Vinyl cutters can be a great tool for adding embellishments or wording to your wood projects, but have you ever had an issue getting your vinyl to stick? Try these tips:

1. Make sure the paint or stain on the project is completely dry.

2. Give the project a clear coat. My favorite clear coat is Mod Podge Spray Clear Acrylic Sealer. It is available in various sheens and using a spray will ensure the paint colors will not bleed together. I only use the spray outdoors because of the odor. I give my projects 2-3 thin coats, letting dry completely between coats. Follow directions on can for use.

3. Once the clear coat is completely dry, the vinyl can be applied. I use permanent vinyl. Oracal 651 is my go-to brand. A way to ensure the vinyl will stick to your surface is to use a transfer tape with a low tackiness. I ditch the standard transfer tape altogether and use a wide roll of painter’s tape to apply vinyl. This is not always convenient for a large project but is an easy and cheap option to apply vinyl words.
